Adult Art Classes

Fit creativity into your busy life with Flex-Class. Sign up for a course – if you need to miss a class, or want to change your course, use remaining Flex-Class slots for other classes at the Phoenix Village Art Center.
Flex-Classes carry over from the fall to the spring session, so you can use them to make art and suit your own schedule over time. See price list below.

CLASS DESCRIPTIONS

Adult Arts and Crafts Classes

A21. Book Arts with Athena Singer
Create a journal, drawing tablet, scrapbook or photo album in this class. Craft the cover, make the paper for the pages, and construct the spine. Hand-made books make perfect gifts. Participants, bring any 2D media you find interesting, such as cutouts from magazines, photographs, interesting wrapping paper, wallpaper, even fabric!

A10. High-Fire ClayProjects  with Roseanne D’Andrea

Explore the wonderful world of ceramics!
Learn hand building techniques, glazing, and a brief introduction to the potter’s wheel. Each session’s project is designed to gain experience. Understand the possibilities of clay -- get those creative juices flowing! Beginner level, but all welcome. Plus $40 fee for clay, glazes, firings.

A20. Piecing Together Mosaics with Athena Singer
Create a unique mosaic using handmade and recycled tiles and objects. Learn how to cut and break tile and glass, glue and grout. Collect broken or discarded ceramic or glass objects to use and share for this class.

A14. Ceramics  with Johanna Valenti

Wheel throwing in high fire (cone 6) ceramics. The class includes basics of thrown cylinders, bowls, goblets, lidded pots, pulled handles. The class is geared toward intermediate students who have already taken an intro to throwing course, but the instructor can accommodate a beginner.

10 weeks: September 18 to November 20  

A17. Jewelry Arts with Angela Colasanti
Enjoy an overview of the fundamentals of jewelry making: material selection; design basics; construction techniques for stringing, wire wrapping, looping earrings, necklaces, bracelets. Use glass, semi-precious gems, precious metals, freshwater pearls. All materials provided. Includes a shopping trip to Potomac Bead Co. to learn effective ways to bead shop.
Add a $75 material fee, payable to the instructor.

Adult Drawing & Painting Classes

A6. Watercolor with Sandy Francella
Focus of this class is color theory, mixing colors, washes, special techniques, and textures. Bring photographs of landscapes, seascapes or garden scenes for reference to create a good composition. Some preliminary sketching is necessary. Your skills will improve with perseverance and practice.

A19. Color Theory with Kathy Bestwick
This class is for any painter who has a need to understand color mixing. Explore pigments creating secondary, tertiary, complimentary colors, tints and shades. Create palettes, color groupings and color ways. Discuss color gamuts for different pigments and print capabilities. Tuesday mornings 10:00 - 12:00
8 weeks: September 14 to November 16

A4. Acrylic Landscape Painting with Sam Wiseman
Paint with a new acrylic product called Interactive! Chroma will be supplying this class with paint. Interactive acrylics dry slowly, giving you more time to blend and rework your art. The patent-pending formulation allows even touch-dry paint to be reworked or ragged-off to blend or reveal layers. Learn landscape painting, color mixing, and brush techniques, while trying this new medium. Students must supply their own canvas.

A1. Anyone Can Draw with Lauren Acton

Study space, composition and perspective using graphite, charcoal or pastels. Choose animals, people or the still life provided. Learn how to see so you can draw your subject using light and shadow. Just practice - anyone can draw better the more they do it! All ages and levels. Materials list provided before class begins.

A3. ". . . the Art of Soul Expression" with Veronica Tronoski

Explore how to paint/create from beyond what the mind's eye can see. Learn about the chakra system. Each week address a different chakra, accessing & painting the energy/emotion from that particular part of your Being. Discover that part of yourself longing to be expressed. If you are feeling "stuck" or long for more "Joy" in your Life…this class is for YOU! You are invited to be present • Open your heart • Express your creative self! No rules apply. Your choice of medium.

A5. Oil Painting with Sandy Francella
Painting with oils Impressionist style.
Learn techniques using texture, line, and light. Learn how to illustrate reflection and shade. Make your best composition from a photograph of a seascape, landscape, or cityscape. Bring old clothes to wear, paint rags, jars with turning lids, turpinoid, oil paint brushes, yellow ochre, ultramarine blue, Alizarin red, and Titanium white. Material list available at first class.

A2. Paint what you want! with Lauren Acton

Beginners and intermediates. Paint with oils from a still life setup, a photo, a book or magazine image. Style and subject matter is your decision. A18. Intro to Oil Painting with Sam Wiseman
Everybody has Artistic Talent. Sam Wiseman offers you several different compositions and genres of painting; then step by step techniques to accomplish finished works. Develop a feel for the subject matter you prefer, and an understanding of the medium. Materials list available.

Adult Workshops

Ceramics - Friday Night Out!
for couples or small groups
with Johanna Valenti
2nd Friday of each month. Come often!
Beginner to intermediate. Workshop supplies clay & potters wheels. You have fun throwing or hand building a masterpiece. Johanna fires and glazes for you. Return at later date to pick up finished work. Bring light refreshments to share. Minimum of six needed to run each class.
Three dates available this workshop:

Ladies Night Out
An evening of Earrings
with Angela Colasanti
Have fun discussing materials/styles/design! Construction techniques taught include wire looping, & wire wrapping. Finish several pairs of earrings. Maybe a pair of crystal ear threaders, or, a post style with semi-precious beads, or, a freshwater pearl set. All sterling silver findings used. Bring light refreshments to share. All materials supplied. Minimum of six needed to run each class.

Additional Programs

 Adesha Art
The Phoenix Village Art Center has joined with Adesha Village to provide programming that promotes mental health through ART. Adult students meet at the art center and work with staff creating works of art. Contact the art center if you, a family member, or client are interested.

Fees for Adult Art Classes

Use Flex-Class packs to pay for Adult Art Classes at Phoenix Village Art Center.
It’s a great way to fit creativity into your busy life!
With Flex-Classes you attend when you can, and save unused Flex-Classes for another time.
How Flex-Class works
Purchase Flex-Classes in packs good for classes or workshops of your choice.
Should you miss a class you can make it up this fall, winter or spring.

General Flex Class Information

  • Special classes and workshops are marked with prices: all others are part of the Flex-Class program.
  • Adult classes are held in 2 hour sessions.
  • Adults supply their own materials or pay a separate materials fee.
  • Class sessions can be purchased in packages of 4,6,8, or 10 class sessions, and can be used for any class.
  • Pre-registration is required for class sessions so that instructors can be prepared for those attending.
  • Weeks that are missed can be made up by either attending a different class in the same session or "saving" it until the next session.
  • If you want to make up a session by attending a class that you are not registered for, please call 610-983-9430 so that the instructor is prepared for you to attend.
  • At each session: pick up and sign your attendance card (filed alphabetically) and give to the instructor.
